Koi Pond, watercolor on Yupo

Made It! Watercolor by Arlene G. Woo

With my son and son-in-law both enjoying surfing, I am drawn to painting waves.  It took me a while to get them right, but I think I've done it "artistically".  Let me know what you think.  Painting on hot press is a LOT different from working on cold press -- not as forgiving.  But I love using the blues which surround our Oahu.  Image: 15"x22", available for $400 unmatted, unframed.  Let me hear from you, Arlene G. Taking my little granddaughter to the zoo has inspired me to paint some of the residents.  But I tried an established watercolor technique of wetting the paper back and front to allow soft edges this time.It was fun for a change.  The image is on a half sheet (22"x15").  Email comments to me Arlene G. A mother peacock and her offspring have been visiting my street for several months.  One morning I saw the male on my neighbot's roof.  I know many people do not like the noise of peacocks, but these two have never been a nuisance.  Of course they have not been on my roof. Lone Tree, Encaustic by Arlene G. Woo

This encaustic can be turned any way that is pleasing to the individual.  I really don't like naming an art piece of mine because I like the viewer to see what he sees.  The gold at the bottom is actually more like an antique gold than the brown that shows in the photo.  I've decided I like the unpredictability of the wax.  7.25"x7.25"  $70 + postage

This is one of the 5"x7" postcard size watercolors that I decided to try.  I wet the paper and painted wet into wet for a very loose image.  It frames out with a mat to an 8"x10".

Night in the City, an encaustic on board

I made this 6"x6" image using hot wax in an ancient method called "encaustic".  We melt the wax and apply with a brush and then fuse the wax to the layer below with a heat gun.  Too much heat and the wax just slides away!  But the process is really fun because you never quite know what you are going to get.  email Arlene G. Swimming Upstream

In Hawaii many people celebrate the Japanese Boys' Day by flying koi or carp banners.  I think the holiday may have been made PC by changing the name to Children's Day, but I still remembering flying a banner in honor of my son.  The carp signifies strength and determination.  This painting was difficult because it is watercolor on yupo, a synthetic medium.  It was chosen as the cover for the Hawaii Bar Journal.

Happy Happy! Original Watercolor

 

This is the second painting inspired by the Lion Dances for Chinese New Year.  I could not resist putting the "Double Happiness" symbol in the upper left corner.  Seeing my three year old granddaughter's pleasure watching the lions and offering them lycee for good luck did indeed create double happiness.

Riders at Kualoa Ranch, oriiginal watercolor

Kualoa Valley gives one a sense of vastness yet of protection.  When one lives in a busy urban environment, it is freeing to take in nothing but nature .  I have been able to paint with friends in this lovely valley .

Whistler 1 - Arlene G. Woo - Hawaii artist

 

This watercolor was painted during the Thanksgiving trip to Whistler Resort.  We had fresh powder every day, and even though it was 6 degrees below zero, it was lovely.  It was a challenge to paint snow after painting green mountains in Hawaii.  Arlene G. Woo

Dream of the Koolaus, an original watercolor by Arlene G. Woo, painted from Hoomaluhia Garden

The Koolau Mountains lie along the midline of Oahu.  Most often they are shades of green and gray.  The task for this painting was to "Not use green".  It was liberating to forget about reality.  Thus, it turned out as an imaginary place.

Sunset on the Mountain Hawaii artist Arlene G. Woo

       This watercolor was selected by Juror Linda Kemp of Ontario, Canada, for exhibition in the Hawaii Watercolor Society Open Show.  Parts of it were poured through textured packing material and torn fabric and then enhanced with watercolor crayon and pencil.
